My favourite John Hughes film is Weird Science/ My wife's is Breakfast Club. I don't know if she knows he's dead yet. I think she'll be bummed by the news.

Planes trains and automobiles and uncle buck to this day are both still in my top ten comedies of all time
sad news ![]() My favourite lines from these movies, as an ode to John ![]() Del: You play with your balls a lot. Neal: I do NOT play with my balls. Del: Larry Bird doesn't do as much ball-handling in one night as you do in an hour! Neal: Are you trying to start a fight? Del: No. I'm simply stating a fact. That's all. You fidget with your nuts a lot. Neal: You know what'd make me happy? Del: Another couple of balls, and an extra set of fingers? Buck: We've done the battle of the wills. The deck's stacked in my favor. You're just gonna lose again. Tia: Try me. Buck: How would you like to spend the next several nights wondering if your crazy, out-of-work, bum uncle will shave your head while you sleep? See you in the car. |

Sad to hear.
I think the Breakfast Club is over rated, It has one GODAWFUL scene that kills the whole movie, and it's the scene where Ally Sheedy is madeover by Ringwald. What was wrong with her being the weird cooky goth girl? That bit when she comes out and the jock suddenly falls for her is just HORRID. I mean the whole premise of the movie is that all the kids are actually the same and are going through the same troubles each day. Yet this scene says, look..... all guys are totally about looks, if you're different, you're not attractive. Would have been a much better movie if Estevez's character had fallen for her as the 'weird' girl.

Such sad news!!
![]() My favorite movie of his was Sixteen Candles. *sighs* Hell, I loved all his movies. Petroleum: I really never viewed the makeover part the way you did. I simply thought Molly's character Claire, was giving Ally's character Allison, a boost in confidence!! Yeah sure, the captain of the football team probably wouldn't have instantly falling in looooove with her, lol. I do get what you're saying, why couldn't he love her when she was weird and eating cap'n crunch and pixie stix sandwiches??? lol

This was such a bummer for me... I think for Gen X-ers, in particular, there was something so relatable and iconic about JH films. He will be missed. Here's a great story about Hughes from an avid fan: http://wellknowwhenwegetthere.blogsp...hn-hughes.html

Weird Science and National Lampoons Vacation (the first one) are my faves of the lot.
That scene in Weird Science where the two boys are in the bar with the black guys is one of the best.

HIs films have a certain quality that you can revisit over and over again and still not get bored with.

Nah, I never saw any of those films you listed in their entirety, or even for a few moments. I did crush on Molly Ringwald from afar...mostly because I crush on a lot of redheads, mostly from afar. My crush on Molly never got me to watch Pretty in Pink though. lol Maybe I have some catching up to do. Perhaps. That time in my life was very dark and dismal, and those films in many ways captured the zeitgeist of the 80's...which I am still trying to a) forget about, and b) recover from. If it wasn't for discovering BBWs, Queen, playing music, Tolkien, and Kurt Vonnegut, I think I would not laugh very much or be inspired, most of the time. Those things fed, clothed, and sheltered me when I discovered them in the 90's, from the bad place I had gone through in the 80's. Anyways, enough moping. lol I loathed a lot of 80's culture...swatch watches, phil collins, walkmans, Duran Duran, Live Aid (apart from Queen), etc. I didn't like Ghostbusters, The Goonies, The Neverending Story (I have appreciated it more in recent years though, as I dig the pro-imagination and reading theme), or ET. There was something depressing and/or humiliating to me about those films. They made me feel stupid and somehow uncomfortable for watching them. Maybe it was just that I felt the shadow of what seemed like imminent nuclear holocaust over me every moment of every day (still do), and it all felt like a tremendous and pointless waste of time. Maybe that was it. Then, Kurt Vonnegut showed me how to laugh at nuclear holocaust, and I am better now. ![]() I do like some Chevy Chase films...Cops and Robbersons is a hoot. I do like some Bill Murray films...What About Bob? is awesome. I do like Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, because in a lot of ways, it's practically my life's story. I do like Field of Dreams, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, This is Spinal Tap, Short Circuit, The Day After, The first six Star Trek films, and Masters of the Universe. All these are in my DVD collection, and almost all are from the 80's. See? I have grown or something. lol Anyways, not trying to trash you, or Mr. Hughes. Like I said, he brought delight to millions. But since you asked what my function was...I gave a speech about it. I don't know where all that came from, except to say that it felt good to get it out of me.

The snuff porn was simply a joke seeing as to how it would be the complete opposite of the spectrum from the movies listed.
Never though I meet someone who didn't like to laugh =P |

no problem...I see where you were going with that.
I love to laugh, now at least. I come close to pissing myself at times when I read Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, or watch American Movie or a King of the Hill episode on DVD. Also, I have to add the Sherlock Holmes stories by A.C. Doyle to the list of literature that rescued me. It felt good to realize that geeks and nerds (even if only in fiction) were kinda cool in their own way. I didn't feel so alone after that. Peace. ![]()
